11.24.2018 | 2:15 AM | COSTA MESA – A 24-year-old female hitchhiker was alive but seriously injured after being hit by a SUV, Saturday morning.
Police and fire officials responded to a reported vehicle versus pedestrian collision on the southbound I-405 just south of Fairview Road around 2:15 AM.
Units arriving on scene found an SUV that had apparently struck a female pedestrian on the side.
Firefighter paramedics treated the victim on scene before transporting her to an area hospital in serious but stable condition.
The driver of the SUV, a Lyft rideshare driver, was reportedly traveling 65 MPH when she swerved to the avoid the pedestrian.
Despite swerving, the pedestrian was struck by the vehicle’s passenger side mirror.
The female pedestrian reported she was attempting to hitchhike however the circumstances surrounding her efforts were unclear.
Officers assisted transporting the five rideshare passengers of the freeway. A firefighter volunteered to drive the ride share driver, who was visible traumatized, off the freeway in her vehicle.
