Costa Mesa: Street Takeover Ends With Arrests After Crash Kills One

10.22.2020 | 2:40 AM | COSTA MESA – A string of street takeovers ended with a rollover crash that left one person dead and another injured, early Thursday morning.

The fatal crash occurred in the intersection of Hyland and Sunflower avenues as officers were responding to reports of a street takeover around 2:40 AM.

When police arrived on scene they located a black Chevrolet pickup truck that had overturned before being rolled on its side by bystanders.

The driver of the truck and two passengers were located nearby. One of the victims, later identified as 23-year-old Sergio Marroquin, Jr., was pronounced deceased on scene.

A second victim was treated on scene before being transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck, 22-year-old Mynor Augusto Esquivelvalle, escaped injury and was later placed under arrest on suspicion of murder.

Esquivelvalle is the cousin of Marroquin, according to police.

Three spectators, one female and two males, were also arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting.

The crash occurred as a group of anywhere from 100 to 200 vehicles traveled to various locations in Orange County to engage in street takeovers where participants engage in reckless driving and donuts.

While it is unknown if drugs or alcohol are involved in the crash, an open beer can and several balloons typically associated with the use of inhalants were located on scene.
