Garden Grove: Mother, Child Both Dead After New Years DUI Crash

01.01.2019 | 12:54 AM | GARDEN GROVE – A 9-year-old girl and her mother were dead after a suspected DUI crash that also hospitalized a ln 8-year-old, early New Years Day.

Authorities responded to reports of the three-vehicle crash on the westbound SR-22 under the Springdale Street overpass around 12:54 AM.

Units arriving on scene located the crash with a truck on its side with several people trapped inside.

Crews used the jaws of life among other tools to free the trapped victims which included a 9-year-old girl and her 33-year-old mother. The mother was freed within 20 minutes and transported to an area hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.

Unfortunately, the 9-year-old girl was badly injured and died on scene.

An 8-year-old boy from the vehicle was able to exit the vehicle without extrication and was also transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The occupants of both other vehicles involved in the crash refused medical treatment.

During the course of their investigation, officers detained a person who became irate and broke out the window of a patrol vehicle.

Officers detained the individual whose relationship to the incident remains unknown.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation however alcohol or drugs are believed to have played a role.
