Newport Beach: 40-Foot Sailboat Runs Aground, Breaks Into Pieces Amid High Tide

07.03.2020 | 9:03 PM | NEWPORT BEACH – A 40-foot sailboat ran aground before breaking into pieces amid high tide but no serious injuries were reported, Friday night.

Authorities responded to reports of a boat crash in the 200 block of East Oceanfront around 9:03 PM.

Units arriving on scene located a 40-foot sailboat that had ran aground and was taking on water causing it to crash back and forth.

First responders rescued several occupants from the vessel including a dog before the mast of the boat came crashing down breaking the ship into pieces.

No serious injuries were reported as a result of the incident but debris were strewn across the beach and about 40 gallons of diesel was believed to have leaked out.

The crash came amid high tides that flooded homes and nearby streets on the Balboa Peninsula.
