Santa Ana: Wrong-Way DUI Driver Causes Major Freeway Crash

06.08.2019 | 1:31 AM | SANTA ANA – A suspected DUI driver was in-custody after entering a freeway wrong-way and colliding head-on with another vehicle, Saturday morning.

Authorities responded to reports of a crash involving a wrong-way driver on the northbound I-5 just south of First Street around 1:31 AM.

Units arriving on scene found two-vehicles involved the crash with multiple injuries and several entrapments.

Firefighter paramedics treated and transported a total of five patients, including two who had to be freed from their vehicle using the Jaws of Life, to area hospitals with serious injuries.

Initial reports indicate the driver of a black SUV was traveling wrong-way in the HOV lane before striking a white sedan occupied by multiple individuals.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was determined to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol and placed under arrest. A bag of multiple open containers of alcohol was recovered from his vehicle after the crash.
