Tustin: Driver Dead After Rear-Ending Big Rig

11.19.2020 | 11:47 PM | TUSTIN – One person was dead after rear-ending a big rig but other involved drivers escaped injury, late Thursday night.

The crash was first reported on the southbound I-5 Freeway just north of Tustin Ranch Road around 11:47 PM.

When officers arrived on scene they located a grey Volkswagen SUV with major front-end damage along with a person down in lanes.

Firefighter paramedics pronounced the person, later identified as the male driver of the Volkswagen SUV, deceased on scene.

Initial reports indicate the the driver of the Volkswagen rear-ended a big rig causing the SUV to become disabled. It was unclear if the driver was ejected or exited the vehicle and was struck in a secondary crash.

Several other vehicles sustained damage after striking debris from the initial crash but no other injuries were reported.

All southbound lanes of the I-5 Freeway were closed at Tustin Ranch Road until further notice while police investigated.
